Veterinarians of Fieldstone Animal Hospital

Dr. Sawyer Dr. Heather L. Sawyer, DVM, Owner

Dr. Heather L. Sawyer opened Fieldstone Animal Hospital in 2008, after working eight years as an associate veterinarian in a New York animal practice.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Dr. Sawyer graduated as the salutatorian of Gettysburg College in 1994 with her bachelor's degree in biology. She worked for one year as a veterinary assistant in a mixed animal practice before entering Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine, where she earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2000.

Dr. Sawyer's goal is genuine and direct: to foster healthier relationships between people and their pets by providing quality healthcare for animals and educating clients so they can make confident pet care decisions. The ability to participate in people's experiences with their pets is deeply satisfying to her. Dr. Sawyer is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

As for her inspiration to become a veterinarian, Dr. Sawyer recalls Scratcher, her childhood cat. "He was my introduction to the importance of the human-animal bond as well as to a career in veterinary medicine," she says. "My cat was one of a few important "people" who helped me emotionally through a very difficult time when my father passed away of cancer when I was only twelve." In fact, throughout her childhood and college years, Dr. Sawyer looked forward to veterinary visits with Scratcher. And when he became diabetic at 10 years of age, the veterinary treatments and ongoing medical attention afforded them six additional healthy and happy years together.

Dr. Sawyer loves the science and challenge of veterinary medicine- solving medical mysteries and puzzles, day-to-day diversity, and ultimately experiencing its rewards.

When she isn't at work, she spends time with her husband Kent, their children Jacob and Benjamin, and her furry family- Sydney, the Australian shepherd mix; Myrtle and Pippin, the cats; and the hobby ducks. She enjoys gardening, quilting, hiking in the mountains, boating, and has been a lifelong soccer player.
